SAFETY STANDARDS

Australian & New Zealand Standard AS 2210.3:2019

All safety boots sold in Australia & New Zealand must comply with a set standard.

Ascent safety boots adhere to the highest level of Australian & New Zealand testing:

A = Antistatic To prevent a build-up of enough static electricity to cause a spark.
E = Energy Absorption Extra shock absorption under the heel.
SRA = Slip Resistant Slip Resistant ‘Water on Ceramic Tiles’
SRC = Slip Resistant Slip Resistant ‘Water on Ceramic Tiles’ & ‘Oil on Metal’. This is the highest level of slip resistance.
HRO = Resistance to Hot Contact The outsole does not melt, char, crack or craze when coming in contact with 300c surface for one minute.
HI = Insulation of Sole Against Heat The inside of the shoe is insulated against heat when put in a sand bath at approximately 150c.
CI = Insulation of Sole Against Cold The inside of the shoe is insulated against cold when put in a cold box at minus 17c for 30 minutes.
WRU = Upper is Water Resistant Minimal water penetrates the upper.
WR = Whole Shoe is Water Resistant No water penetration within 15 minutes.

Every Ascent shoe is designed based on its purpose, which means the technology in each shoe can differ from another. The one thing that they all have in common is that they are built to perform and provide active feet with the support and performance they need.

Safety Standards

A: Antistatic Footwear

Benefit: Static electricity finds ground through the boots. The purpose is to prevent the build-up of enough static electricity to cause a spark.

What: Australian & NZ Standards AS 2210.3:2019 Additional Classification. Antistatic Footwear. After conditioning in a dry and wet atmosphere, the electrical resistance is above 100kΩ and less than or equal to 1000kΩ.

Where: Through the sole and insole of the boot.

CI: Insulation of Sole Against Cold

Benefit: Temperature insulation for your feet when working in cold environments.

What: Australian & NZ Standards AS 2210.3:2019 Additional Classification. Insulation of Sole Against Cold. The inside of the shoe is insulated against cold when put in a cold box at minus 17ºC for 30 minutes.

Where: Whole shoe

E: Energy Absorption

Benefit: Superior shock absorption under the heel. See 'Cushioning' below for more details.

What: Australian & NZ Standards AS 2210.3:2019 Additional Classification. Energy Absorption of Seat Region. Passes the test for shock absorption under the heel.

Where: Under the heel

EH: Electric Hazard Resistant Footwear (ASTMF2412)

Benefit: Provides a secondary source of electric hazard protection if stepping on live electrical circuits, electrically energised conductors, parts or apparatus.

What: USA Standards ASTMF2412 Additional Classification. Electric Hazard Resistant Footwear. No current flow or leakage of current in excess of 1.0mA under DRY conditions when applying 18,000V at 60Hz for 1 minute.

Where: Through the sole of the boot

HI: Insulation of Sole Against Heat

Benefit: Temperature insulation for your feet when working in hot environments.

What: Australian Standards 2210.3:2009 Additional Classification. Insulation of Sole Against Heat. The inside of the shoe is insulated against heat when put in a sandbath at approximately 150C.

Where: Whole shoe

HRO: Resistant to Hot Contact (300ºC)

Benefit: Ideal for people occasionally stepping on hot surfaces/objects while working.

What: Australian & NZ Standards AS 2210.3:2019 Additional Classification. Resistance to Hot Contact. The outsole does not melt, char, crack or craze when coming in contact with 300ºC surface for one minute.

Where: Outsole

SRA: Slip Resistant with Water on Ceramic Tiles

Benefit: Provides sufficient slip resistance to prevent a fall when working on soapy wet tiles.

What: Australian & NZ Standards AS 2210.3:2019 Additional Classification. SLS (soapy water) solution on ceramic tile test. Slip resistance coefficient only heel contact is > 0.28, and slip resistance coefficient with whole shoe flat contact is > 0.32.

Where: Outsole

SRC: Slip Resistant with Oil on Metal, and with Water on Tiles

Benefit: Provides sufficient slip resistance to prevent a fall when working on a low friction surface such as oil spilled on metal, or on soapy wet tiles. This is the highest level of slip resistance.

What: Australian & NZ Standards AS 2210.3:2019 Additional Classification. Glycerol (oil) on steel floor test. Slip resistance coefficient only heel contact is > 0.13, and slip resistance coefficient with whole shoe flat contact is > 0.18. SLS (soapy water) solution on ceramic tile test. Slip resistance coefficient only heel contact is > 0.28, and slip resistance coefficient with whole shoe flat contact is > 0.32. Slip Resistant with Oil on Metal, and with Water on Tiles.

Where: Outsole

Safety Toe 1.5 ton Compression

Benefit: Protects toes by providing a minimum clearance when something runs over them.

What: Australian & NZ Standards AS 2210.3:2019 Standard. Compression test where a 15kN force is gradually applied to the toe, tested by an independent and authorised laboratory and then certified by SAI Global.

Where: Toe

Safety Toe 200 Joules Impact

Benefit: Protects toes by providing a minimum clearance when a large object falls on it.

What: Australian & NZ Standards AS 2210.3:2019 Standard. Tested with a drop strike test machine with a 200 Joule force by an independent and authorised laboratory and then certified by SAI Global. Note that the Australian standard is higher than the US standard.

Where: Toe

WRU: Water Resistant Upper

Benefit: Minimal water penetrates through the upper, and minimal water is absorbed by the upper itself.

What: Australian & NZ Standards AS 2210.3:2019 Additional Classification. Water Penetration and Water Absorption of Upper. Minimal water penetration through the upper when tested for simulated walking in shallow water.

Where: Upper below the level of the laces.
