Whilst there are certain internal features like comfort and stability to look for in the best hiking shoes, what’s underfoot also makes a difference to your confidence as you step out on a trail.

The best hiking shoes will have a varied outsole design to be able to handle uneven, unstable surfaces in various terrains. 

If you step on uneven ground with a smooth-soled runner or sneaker the shoe could easily slip whilst a fit for purpose design will catch on a part of the tread making you feel more secure in your footing and confidence.

Good rubber outsoles are lugged for greater traction featuring deep indentations, grooves and varied grip angles.

Lugs are the large rubber nodules attached to the outsole and come in various shapes and sizes.
